Snowboarding is growing bigger every year. One key to keeping new boarders in the sport, and to keep the sport growing, is for new boarders to have an enjoyable first experience. So, for all of those new snowboarders who will soon be heading out to their favorite mountain, here are seven quick tips for having a good first day of snowboarding:
1. Rent your gear in town. Rent you snowboard and boots from a shop near your house. This way you will have at least one night to try on your boots, to adjust your bindings, and to get familiar with the equipment.
2. Arrive at the mountain early. If you get to the mountain early you will be able to get a good parking spot, and not have to wait in long lift ticket lines.
3. Take a lesson. A one or two hour group lesson will take away some of the first time frustrations.
4. Take a break. You may feel like you could snowboard all day. But, remember to refuel. Drink plenty of liquids, especially water, and eat a good lunch. A good break will make the second half of your day more enjoyable.
5. Remember to: Keep your weight low and toward your front foot, keep your arms out in front of you, keep your legs bent, and keep the downhill edge off the snow.
6. Stick with it. Don’t quit after your first ten minutes on the mountain. Snowboarding can be difficult in the beginning, but all your hard work will pay off.
7. Go back again. Every time you go to the mountain you will get better. Practice makes perfect.
