It is important to properly store you board during the summer months. First, look at the base, edges, and topsheet. If there is any major damage it is best to have this repaired now, rather than wait until next fall.
Then, you want to wash your board and bindings with water to remove any dirt or dried on mud from late spring runs. It is even a good idea to remove the bindings to clean under the base plate. Make sure you completely dry your board. After your board is clean you could sharpen the edges of your board if you want, but at least polish the edges to remove any rust from the edges. Make sure to clean off any metal shavings from the board.
Next, use a base cleaner to thoroughly clean the base of your board. After the base is clean, wax your board using a warm temperature wax (Click here to see our WAXING article). You want to apply a thick coat of wax, but DO NOT scrape the wax. You could even apply some wax to the metal edges to help protect them from rust. Or, after the wax is completely dry apply a thin layer of machine oil (which is different from oil that you put in your car) to the metal edges of your board. This will help prevent the edges from rusting. But, keep the oil off of the base or the sidewalls of the board.
Now that your board is prepared for storage you need to find a place to store it. You can store your board with the bindings on or off. If you decide to store your board with the bindings off it may be a good idea to tape the screws to the bindings so that they do not get lost. You want to store your board out of direct sunlight in a place where there is a constant room temperature (about 72 degrees Fahrenheit). It is not a good idea to store your board in a place where the temperature fluctuates, or where it is extremely hot, or extremely cold. Also, do not store your board so that it is laying directly on its base. Prop it against a wall or lay the board on its side.
Your board should now survive the summer months. When spring comes all you have to do is wipe the oil off the edges and repolish the edges. Then, scrape the wax off the base and reapply the correct temperature wax.
