TRANSITIONS AND EXITS: Photographs by Ari Marcopoulos,
Edited by Diego Cortez, Interview by Louise Neri.

You won't find a lot of riding in this book. But, that's not what this book is about. Ari Marcopoulos' Transitions and Exits is a book of photographs that shows professional and amateur snowboarders hanging out in hotel rooms, joking around with their friends, and waiting in airports for snow storms to pass. The life of a professional or amateur snowboarder isn't just competitions and photo shoots.

The photographs in Transitions and Exits range from informal photos of snowboarders relaxing in hotel rooms, to photo shoots in the backcountry. In an interview with Louise Neri, Ari said,

"Generally, I like to photograph people when they are not too engaged in anything. I don't know where this comes from, but I like that stillness. To find the snowboarders in moments of solitude or repose is the opposite of how they spend most of their time engaged in extreme physical activity." The photographs in this book are raw. Some are even a bit disturbing. But, in Transitions and Exits, Ari's photographs show us a side of snowboarding that is rarely seen.

Also, in Transitions and Exits Ari uses many different photography techniques to capture the riders. Most of the photographs in the book are shot with 35mm film. But, the photo to the left was done differently. It may look like a group of riders coming down the mountain. However, the single rider was shot in 35mm as he came down the mountain. Then, after the run an 8x10 format camera was used to photograph the rider's completed line. The rider was then digitally added to the 8x10 photo to make the completed photograph. The 35mm photos of this run are in the book, and the full-sized 8x10 photograph is fantastic!

Included in the book is an interview with Ari by Louise Neri. In this interview we learn a lot about Ari, his passion for photography, and his inspiration for Transitions and Exits.

The photographs in Transitions and Exits show a side of snowboarding that is rarely seen. Most snowboarding magazines are filled with photographs of snowboarders doing one trick after another. We rarely see photographs of snowboarders not riding, waiting in a hotel room for a storm to pass, joking around, or hanging out with their friends; that's the side of snowboarding portrayed in Ari Marcopoulos' Transitions and Exits.
